Wafaa Soltane

Wafaa Soltane, born in 1994 in Oran, went to the University of Oran, studying French literature until she took up documentary photography.

Her introductory experience is further reinforced by her formative mentoring alongside the photographer Liasmine Fodil, and an in-depth mentor programme conducted by Lola Khalfa for the Tilawin project, from 2021 to 2022.

Wafaa, a godchild of the first edition of the Tilawin mentorship, has produced a series of photographic projects;

A project focused on an older neighbourhood in Oran: “Lui, non”. “I don’t want this district to disappear and be replaced by new soulless buildings. As soon as I have a free moment I go and take photos, I meet people and I forget the notion of time in SIDI EL HOUWARI”.

Among others; el bayet; self-portraits; and also a photographic documentary on the subject of marriage.

Wafaa exhibited her photographs at the Institut français d’Oran, at the Magasin du CNAC in Grenoble and at the Nuit de l’Année (Rencontres d’Arles), as part of the Tilawin project.

After this fruitful phase, Wafaa resided at the MiCT in Tunis, where she produced a documentary project on tattooing and Tunisian women, mentored by Souad Mani and trained with photographer Samir Mahfoudhi.

The photographer realized “Marhoumoun”, In memory of her dear cousin Youcef Mohammed Chikhie

In Tunis, with the creative and cultural initiative Sens of Art, a new project entitled HAWMA saw the light of day.

Based on detailed on-site research conducted with photography, HAWMA illustrates stories shared with the public through exhibitions, sound installations and a series of other interactive elements.

The project led to the publication of a book entitled ‘HAWMA’, an experimental art book devoted to the conditions in which football is played in atypical urban environments in the heart of Tunis.
