The Medina of Tunis became the site of Larie’s creative residency as part of Slash Transition, in collaboration with L’Art Rue, running from October 27 to November 19, 2024, culminating in the collective multimedia project Change∞.

Change∞ immerses its audience in a sensory exploration that activates all five senses, allowing them to experience change in its most embodied form. Sound leads the way, guiding the audience through the socio-historical layers of the Medina. while,Scent, as a subtle but powerful element, weaves an additional dimension into the experience, a connection between the audience and the space.

The socio-historical context of the Medina informed the development of Change∞ during the residency.

In this second phase, Larie engaged in a process that questioned the layers of the Medina’s territory. They navigated its alleys, observing its visual landscape—mannequins dressed in traditional artisans’ garments—immersed in a blend of scents from kafteji, makroudh, and perfume, alongside the distinct sounds of the Medina: the cries of vendors, laughter, and the rhythmic clinking of jewelry artisans at work.

Larie documented this environment extensively, choosing to center local residents as the voice of the Medina, constructing a soundscape that guides the audience through its narratives.  “Larie were able to witness multiple perspectives and seek points of intersection where consensus emerges,” noted Hédi Khelil.

In their research and documentation, the artist encountered an elder from the Medina who embodies the heritage and rituals transmitted across generations. This figure became a reflection of the Medina’s continuity, standing at the intersection of eras that have passed through its streets. The layering of time and history, as Larie recognized, could only be represented by a local voice.

As Hédi Khelil observed, “Larie propose a sound superposition of the vocal material gathered during their encounters and sensory exploration of the Medina,” weaving these elements into a sonic narrative that reflects the Medina’s complexity and collective memory.

“This was only possible because of the people who believed and put their souls into it,” Larie reflected.

Change∞ was developed as part of the Creative Europe project “Slash Transition,” in collaboration with L’Art Rue.
